Why Client Hypervisors will become really important

A few years ago Citrix launched the first version of XenClient. With this launch a big supplier (Citrix) started a product virtualizing the operating system on client hardware. When Citrix launches the technical people love the technique, but many people are/were wondering which business needs such products will fulfill. Although several suppliers followed, even Microsoft announced the availability of Hyper-V in the Windows 8 client; still the technique is not really adopted and is not hyped like other virtualization techniques. In this article I will describe my opinion why I think Client Hypervisors will become important, but by other reasons than current often used.

Are there still competitors for Citrix XenApp?

(and is that the reason Citrix is promoting XenDesktop that much)?

However Citrix extended his product line with many new products (also in different areas/market) many people (both IT as end-user) connect Citrix to the Server Based Computing market with the product that nowadays is called XenApp. However when you attended any of the Citrix events lately just a small portion of the sessions and information is about XenApp (while there are still made enhancements in the product). Many attendees were asking if Citrix is forgetting XenApp (still their flagship in the product line) too much, by focusing on the other products definitely in marketing and maybe in development.

How "Free" are the free server virtualization products?

Some years ago the big three competitors in the Server Virtualization market Citrix, VMware and Microsoft decided to give away (a part of) the product for free. In this article I'm going to describe what the free product actually offers and how useful these free versions are. I will just mention and compare the available features. I'm not going to discuss how these features are implemented and how good they function/perform. When considering a free hypervisor you should always test the product to see if the offered features offer the functionality you would like to have.

The Need for Workspace Management

Managing the user desktop experience is getting more and more in the picture in almost every IT infrastructure. The User Desktop management started with arranging that the user settings configured within his desktop were retained, so the user only had to configure those options once. This started with implementing roaming profiles by Microsoft. While those roaming profiles had several issues, Flex or Hybrid Profiles were introduced.

Back to the future: PDI

During the E2E Virtualization Congress London in November 2011 I gave a presentation with this title. The presentation was based on an opinion article (in Dutch) I wrote in March 2011 for the website of the magazine computable with the title the Traditional Desktop is going to disappear.

This article will combine both the Dutch article and the presentation into a new article about the topic that a Physical Desktop is still a good possibility to offer the applications to the end user (or combined with other techniques).

The need for Advanced Features within Server Virtualization Part 1

Server virtualization is nowadays commodity. The last years I did not see a customer which is not using server virtualization in some way. Logically step for every organization, but I have seen many customers starting with server virtualization without a real plan or vision. Causing lot of performance issues or implementation of server virtualization infrastructures with lots of features not used or enabled. In some way many customers have chosen to use the most feature full version of the suite, which makes me wonder if all those features are really needed and used.

In this article I will describe the most known features and my opinion it's really needed within the infrastructure. I will use the features available in VMware vSphere, Citrix XenServer and Microsoft Hyper-V.
